Jurupa Valley questions we hear often

Which county is Jurupa Valley in?

Jurupa Valley is in Riverside County. It incorporated on July 1, 2011, making it one of the newest cities in the county — which is why some older records and mailing addresses still reference Mira Loma, Rubidoux, Glen Avon or Pedley rather than the city name.

My address still says Mira Loma or Rubidoux. Does that cause filing problems?

It should not. Federal and state returns use your mailing address as the IRS and FTB have it; the community name in your address does not change your obligations. Where it can matter is business registration and licensing, where the correct jurisdiction is the City of Jurupa Valley even if your mail says otherwise.

I'm an owner-operator with my own truck. What is different about my return?

Several things: the equipment itself is a depreciable asset with choices about how quickly to write it off, self-employment tax applies to net profit, per-diem meal rules for transportation workers differ from the general rules, and quarterly estimated payments are usually required. Recordkeeping through the year is what makes or breaks the return.

Do you handle both the business and the owner's personal return?

Yes, and for most small businesses that is the sensible way to do it — the business return drives the personal one, and looking at them separately is how planning opportunities get missed.

What if I haven't filed for several years?

That is a solvable situation and a common one. The first step is establishing what the IRS and the FTB actually show on file for you, then building the missing returns from real records. We do not estimate an outcome or promise a settlement figure before the facts are in front of us.

Do I need a business license from the City of Jurupa Valley?

Businesses operating in the city are generally required to register with it, including home-based businesses. Since the city is relatively new, requirements have changed since incorporation, so we confirm the current rule with the city rather than relying on older guidance.
